Derrick Moore, a dedicated 47-year-old educator and father of four from Loganville, Georgia, tragically lost his life after leaping into hazardous waters to save a child caught in a rip current. The rescue took place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, leaving an entire school district, a local community, and a grieving family honoring a man whose final act was one of remarkable selflessness.
According to details released by the Myrtle Beach Police Department, the emergency occurred shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 7, near 10th Avenue South. A young girl became trapped in a strong rip current shortly after lifeguards had finished their shift for the day. Spotting the child in danger, Moore entered the surf to assist her, despite having no personal connection to the young girl. He successfully maneuvered her back to the safety of the shore, but the powerful water dragged him beneath the surface before he could escape himself.
A search ensued, and authorities ultimately located Moore’s body after it washed ashore around 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. He was subsequently identified as the 47-year-old Loganville resident.
A Beloved Educator Known as “Coach”
In addition to being a devoted parent, Moore was a cherished member of the DeKalb County School District in Georgia. At the time of his passing, he was serving as an educator at Rockbridge Elementary School, having previously taught at Jolly Elementary School. His students warmly nicknamed him “Coach,” a testament to the meaningful, supportive relationships he built inside and outside the classroom.
The DeKalb County School District voiced profound grief over his passing, praising him as a treasured teacher who cared deeply for the young people in his charge. In response to the tragedy, school administrators arranged for grief counselors and trained support staff to be available at both Rockbridge Elementary and Jolly Elementary. Moore leaves behind a family that includes four children.
