Odin Hensley Obituary, AUSTIN, Texas — Odin Hensley, a 17-year-old senior and standout two-sport athlete at Lake Travis High School, has died following a serious medical emergency during football practice earlier this week.
Hensley experienced a cardiac arrest during practice Monday morning, according to information provided about the incident. Travis County STAR Flight transported him by helicopter to Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, where he was admitted to intensive care. Doctors monitored his heart, brain and other organs while his family remained at his bedside.
The Lake Travis Independent School District confirmed Hensley’s death Thursday, saying he died overnight from complications related to the medical emergency. The district did not release a specific cause of death beyond the serious health emergency he suffered during football practice.
Hensley was known as a dedicated athlete who competed in both football and wrestling. A 6-foot-3 offensive lineman, he had maintained a 3.7 grade-point average and had already attracted attention from college scouts. In wrestling, he won the district championship at 285 pounds in 2025 and advanced to the state tournament in 2026.
The Lake Travis community remembered Hensley as a kind and determined young man who was a valued teammate, classmate and friend. Superintendent Curtis Null said Hensley had been part of the Lake Travis ISD community since attending Lake Pointe Elementary School and that his presence had touched many lives.
The football program canceled the remainder of Monday’s practice following the medical emergency. A prayer vigil was held Wednesday evening at Lake Hills Church after organizers moved the gathering from the high school campus because of the size of the community response. The school district also made counselors available to students, staff and families coping with the loss.
Hensley’s death has left his family, teammates, classmates, coaches and teachers grieving. A fundraiser was organized to help his family with medical expenses and lost income associated with time away from work during his hospitalization and treatment.
As the Lake Travis community mourns the loss of a young athlete whose life included achievements in both football and wrestling, those who knew Hensley are being encouraged to keep his family and loved ones in their thoughts. His memory will remain part of the community he grew up in and represented, and condolences go to his family, friends, teammates, classmates, coaches and all those affected by his passing.
