Riley Costello Murder-Suicide: 21-Year-Old Hairdresser Was Found Dead; Killed by Father Jeff Costello In Port Richmond

The Port Richmond community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Riley Costello, 21, a young hairdresser who was found dead alongside her father, Jeff Costello, inside their Philadelphia home Saturday.

Philadelphia police are investigating the deaths as an apparent murder-suicide, with investigators saying Jeff Costello is believed to have fatally shot his daughter before taking his own life.

Police were called to a residence in the 2800 block of Mercer Street at approximately 1:30 p.m. Saturday after concerns were raised when family members and others were unable to reach the residents.

When officers entered the home, they discovered a 58-year-old man and his 21-year-old daughter suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace said investigators believe the shooting may have occurred several days before the bodies were discovered.

Based on evidence at the scene, investigators believe Jeff Costello shot Riley before turning the firearm on himself. However, the motive remains under investigation, and authorities have not released additional information about what may have preceded the deaths.

“What might have motivated a father to turn the gun on his daughter and then on himself, it is still under investigation at this time,” Pace said, according to the information provided.

The discovery has deeply shaken the Port Richmond neighborhood, where residents described the community as quiet and family-oriented. The deaths have left neighbors and others struggling to comprehend how such a devastating tragedy could occur in their community.

For those who knew Riley, the loss represents far more than a police investigation. At just 21 years old, she was a young woman building her future and pursuing a career as a hairdresser.

Her death has left friends, neighbors and loved ones mourning a life that had so much still ahead of it. Those who knew Riley are now left with memories of her personality, relationships and the moments they shared with her.

Riley was not defined by the circumstances of her death. She was a daughter, friend and young professional with dreams, relationships and plans for her future.

As investigators continue working to understand what happened inside the Mercer Street home, Riley’s loved ones are facing the much more personal task of grieving her loss.

The circumstances surrounding the deaths remain under investigation, and authorities have not announced any additional information about the motive or events leading up to the shooting.

For the Port Richmond community, the tragedy has created a profound sense of sorrow. Riley’s friends and loved ones are now remembering her for the person she was and the future she was beginning to build.
