Thomas E. “Tom” Mooney Jr. Obituary, JOHNSTON, R.I. — Thomas E. “Tom” Mooney Jr., a beloved veteran, community leader, husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, leaving the Johnston community mourning the loss of a man remembered for his service, compassion and dedication to others.
Tom shared more than 54 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Valerie Mooney of Johnston. Their life together was centered on love, commitment and family. He was also a proud father to Sherri Mooney and Tommy Mooney and a loving grandfather to Gia, Chloe, Valen and Charliese.
He is also survived by his brother, John, sister-in-law, Sandra, nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends. Those who knew Tom remembered him not simply as a relative or acquaintance, but as someone who welcomed others with kindness and made people feel like part of his family.
Tom’s commitment to service was shaped in part by his military career. A proud U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Vietnam War with the 25th Infantry’s Wolfhounds Tunnel Rats. His service earned him two Purple Heart medals, reflecting the sacrifices he made while serving his country.
Following his military service, Tom continued supporting fellow veterans and remained connected to the veteran community through organizations including VFW Post 2396 and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). His continued involvement reflected a lasting commitment to service, camaraderie and those who had served alongside him.
Beyond his military accomplishments, Tom made an impact through his relationships and community involvement. He was remembered as someone who encouraged others, offered kindness and looked for ways to make a positive difference. His roles as a coach, friend, family member and community figure allowed him to touch many lives throughout the years.
As family, friends, fellow veterans and members of the Johnston community remember Tom, they are holding onto the lessons, laughter and memories he shared with them. His sudden passing has left a void among those who knew and loved him.
