The Fenwick Island community is mourning the death of an 80-year-old woman who was fatally injured when a pickup truck crashed into a bench outside Mancini’s Brick Oven Pizzeria late Friday afternoon.
The woman was seated on the bench with her 17-year-old granddaughter when the truck struck them, according to Fenwick Island Police Chief Michael Morrisey. The teenager was also seriously injured in the collision.
Police said the pickup truck was attempting to enter a handicapped parking space when the driver’s foot reportedly slipped from the brake and struck the accelerator. The vehicle traveled over a parking barrier before crashing into the area where the grandmother and granddaughter were sitting.
Both victims suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to Christiana Hospital in Newark for emergency treatment.
Despite efforts to save her, the 80-year-old woman later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Information about the 17-year-old granddaughter’s current condition was not immediately available. Her injuries have added another layer of anguish to a family already facing the devastating loss of a loved one.
