The Newport community is mourning the loss of Theodore “Teddy” Connor Upson, 24, of Graves Road, who died at home surrounded by family and friends on August 12, 2026.
Born September 26, 2001, at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Hartford, Teddy lived a life remembered for family, friendship, adventure, hard work and laughter. Those who knew him described him as a genuinely good person who had a rare ability to make people feel welcome.
Teddy formed friendships wherever he went and with people of many different ages and backgrounds. His large circle of friends reflected the warmth, humor and character he brought into the lives of others.
He graduated from CVA in 2020 and continued his education at Herkimer College, earning his degree in 2022.
His professional life included several years with TJ Allen Trucking, where he worked from 2016 through 2023. During those years, he developed lasting friendships with coworkers. In 2023, he began a new chapter when he joined the New York State Police, continuing a path of service and dedication.
Outside of work, Teddy had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping and valued the opportunity those activities provided to spend time in nature and create memories with family and friends.
Aviation was another important part of his life. Teddy earned his private pilot’s license and owned a Piper PA-11 that he affectionately called his “Puddle Jumper.” Flying reflected the adventurous spirit that was so much a part of his personality.
Yet, despite his many interests and accomplishments, Teddy’s greatest joy came from people.
He loved spending time with family and friends and was known for the close relationships he developed. At work, he affectionately referred to his group of friends as “The Boys,” a nickname that reflected the camaraderie and loyalty he shared with those closest to him.
Teddy leaves behind his parents, Roy and Lisa Upson, and his sister, Alexis (Evan Stone). He is also survived by his grandparents, Roy and Cathy Upson of Mohawk, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, coworkers and friends.
He was predeceased by his grandparents, Carl and Marie Irwin of Cold Brook.
For those who loved Teddy, his absence will be felt in countless everyday moments — empty seats, unanswered messages, familiar stories and the memories of times spent together. His family and friends are now left to carry those memories forward.
Though his life lasted only 24 years, Teddy’s obituary reflects a life rich in experiences and meaningful relationships. He worked hard, pursued the things he loved, served others and formed friendships that extended across generations.
Funeral services will be held at Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish, Our Lady of Lourdes Campus, 2222 Genesee St., Utica, on Wednesday, August 19, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Poland Cemetery.
Calling hours are scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the church.
Arrangements are entrusted to Autenrith Funeral Home in Newport. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Kuyahoora Valley Ambulance Corps or Newport Volunteer Fire Co. #4.
Teddy Upson will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, loyalty, humor, kindness and the many friendships he created throughout his life.
His years were far too few, but the memories, laughter, friendships and love he leaves behind will endure among the people who knew him best.
