A teenager died Thursday morning after reportedly exiting a vehicle and jumping from a bridge along eastbound Interstate 526, according to the North Charleston Police Department.
Police said officers responded at approximately 7:22 a.m. to a report of a teenager who had exited a vehicle on the eastbound I-526 bridge before going over the side.
The teenager was later located beneath the bridge with assistance from the Charleston Police Department’s Marine Unit. Authorities said the teen was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The North Charleston Police Department and the Charleston County Coroner’s Office are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
The incident temporarily affected traffic on the eastbound side of the bridge as emergency crews responded and authorities secured the area.
