AAron “Butch” Marsh Obituary, SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. — AAron “Butch” Marsh, a gifted athlete who played wide receiver for the Boston Patriots during the final years of the American Football League, died on August 7, 2026, in Shelbyville, Tennessee. He was 81.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, Marsh grew up in Springfield, where he established himself as an outstanding multi-sport athlete at Springfield High School. His speed, agility and natural football instincts made him one of the region’s most promising young players and set the foundation for a distinguished football career.
Marsh continued his education and football career at Eastern Kentucky University, where he became one of the school’s first African-American student-athletes. From 1964 through 1967, he starred for the Colonels, initially playing tailback before transitioning to wide receiver.
During his Eastern Kentucky career, Marsh earned All-Ohio Valley Conference honors in 1966 and 1967 and was named a Second-Team Little All-American in 1967. He also helped the Colonels win the 1967 Grantland Rice Bowl. Marsh finished his college career with 147 receptions, 2,246 receiving yards and 24 touchdowns, records that remained in place for decades.
His accomplishments at Eastern Kentucky were later recognized when he was named to the school’s All-Century Football Team in 2009, further cementing his place among the program’s most accomplished players.
Marsh was selected by the Boston Patriots in the third round of the 1968 NFL/AFL Draft. During his rookie season, he played in all 14 games, starting 12, and recorded 19 receptions for 331 yards and four touchdowns. His performance earned him recognition as the Patriots’ Rookie of the Year.
He returned the following season and again appeared in all 14 games, recording 108 receiving yards while also contributing on special teams. Midway through the season, Marsh transitioned to cornerback, where his tackling ability and athleticism impressed the coaching staff. He remained with the Patriots through 1970 before injuries brought his professional football career to an end.
Marsh’s legacy extended beyond his years in professional football, with his accomplishments at Eastern Kentucky and his contributions to the Boston Patriots marking a notable career in American football.
